Katie Nolan rips ‘stupid’ Donald Trump despite ESPN’s policy

Katie Nolan’s rise in the sports media industry has been fueled by her willingness to passionately speak her mind about controversial topics.

Nolan, who recently joined ESPN, made an appearance on Viceland’s popular “Desus and Mero” late-night show Wednesday, and called Donald Trump a “f—ing stupid person.” ESPN recently amended its social media guidelines, with a focus on employees avoiding politics.

TMZ reported that Nolan was warned, but not suspended because of her comments

“We have looked into the totality of Nolan’s comments, they were inappropriate and we have addressed it with her,” ESPN said in a statement.

While discussing whether a thumbs up has become a racist symbol, Desus said it was “because Trump always does this (thumbs up) with his thing,” and Nolan’s first response was actually bleeped out, even though Viceland allows cursing on the show.

“That’s because he’s a [bleep],” Nolan said. “Back it up. Back it up. That’s because he is a f—ing stupid person.”
WARNING: Explicit language

Nolan is not the first ESPN employee to criticize Trump. Jemele Hill called him a white supremacist on Twitter, which led to the president calling for her to be fired.

She was not, but ESPN issued a statement publicly reprimanding her and later unveiled a revised social media policy to its employees.

“Commentaries on relevant sports-related issues are appropriate, but we should refrain from overt partisanship or endorsement of particular candidates, politicians or political parties,” the policy said.

Nolan’s comments came on television, not social media. Hill, who was suspended later for tweets about Jerry Jones and national anthem protests, said she felt the backlash against her was in part because of the medium and that had she just said it on television, it wouldn’t have caused nearly the firestorm it did.

ESPN hired Nolan in part because she has one of the strongest female voices in sports, but how they handle inevitable controversies like this one will be interesting to monitor.
