The Walking Dead season 9 news: Whisperers to arrive in Fear crossover bombshell?

The Walking Dead finished its eighth season last night, finally putting an end to Negan’s dastardly reign, but with a lot of speculation about the next villain in the show, have fans missed the truth that’s been sitting right under their noses?

Last night’s explosive finale finally saw Rick Grimes (played by Andrew Lincoln) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) go toe-to-toe in a final battle.

After Eugene (Josh McDermitt) slyly sabotaged the Saviors’ guns Negan’s army didn’t stand a chance.

Although fans were surprised that Rick spared Negan’s life, no one was more angry than Maggie Rhee (Lauren Cohan).

At the beginning of season seven Negan famously used his bat Lucille to cave Maggie’s husband Glenn Rhee’s (Steven Yuen) head in.

Maggie’s disagreement with Rick’s decision has now sparked rumours that she could be the main antagonist of season nine.

However, whilst some fans are focusing on Negan and where he will be next season, others are thinking about upcoming antagonists in a different way.

One fan on Twitter mused: “So I’m gonna say it… I think that Fear is The Whisperers’ back story.

“Pretty sure that is it. It’s the PPP thing, plus I’m pretty sure I’ve seen three different Whisperers in the promos.”

If this Walking Dead super fan is correct, viewers could be looking at one of the best twists in television.

Fear the Walking Dead’s fourth season starts at the end of the month, and once it has come to an end The Walking Dead’s ninth season will be right around the corner.

What if, after spending four years rooting for the characters in Fear, they arrive in modern day The Walking Dead as Ricks newest and formidable foes: The Whisperers?

This twist would also complicate matters for Morgan Jones (Lennie James).

Morgan is set to begin his journey years in the past with the Fear the Walking Dead cast starting this month.

Already at odds with himself over deciding whether to kill or not for the protection of Hilltop, how will he react if he has to choose between his old group — presumably the group that saved him shortly after he split from Rick in season one - and Hilltop, the group that has supported him.

Suffice to say, this theory has some merit behind it, and would explain why Morgan being moved over to the spin-off show was such an integral decision.

Although the producers haven’t spoken about season nine too much yet, Scott Gimple may have mentioned next year’s villain.

Speaking on The Talking Dead, he discussed Maggie and her conflict with Rick.

He teased: “It looks like that to me. Lauren [Cohan] is so amazing in that scene. She's full Maggie Corleone.”

Scott also added that the group will be “facing different problems with each other.”

The Walking Dead is expected to return in October 2018.

Fear The Walking Dead season 4 begins at 23rd April at 9pm on AMC. (Express UK)
