Game of Thrones season 8 spoilers: Samwell Tarly the TRUE heir to the Iron Throne?

Game of Thrones has its fair share of dutiful heroes who are certainly in the running to claim the Iron Throne, but a group of fans online have got together and brandished a theory about another mystery Targaryen - except this time it’s Samwell Tarly.

With the final season of Game of Thrones rapidly approaching, fans online are obsessing over every tiny detail in order to work out what could happen in the final episodes.

After years of theorising that Jon Snow (played by Kit Harrington) was in fact a secret Targaryen, fans were proven right last season after Bran Stark’s (Isaac Hempstead-Wright) vision.

However fans are not satisfied and have now delved into the Targaryen heritage once more in search for who the mysterious “third head of dragon” is, after being mentioned briefly throughout the series.

Strangely enough, the die-hard fans have settled on a very unsuspecting character: Samwell Tarly (John Bradley).

Game of Thrones historians on Reddit seem to have done their homework.

Fans will remember Oberyn Martell (Pablo Pascal) taking on The Mountain (Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson) seeking revenge for killing the children of his sister, Elia Martell.

This new theory claims that one of these children were smuggled away and left with a family of Targaryen loyalists - The Tarlys.

Sam’s character supposedly mirrors that of both Elia and her husband, Rhaegar, who both had a “great love for books and songs” and a “gentle heart and sweet wit”.

Although this argument alone may not be too convincing, the supporting evidence certainly makes Sam’s parentage a little less clear.

Randyll Tarly (James Faulkner) famously forced Sam to forgo his house and sent him to join the Night’s Watch after vehemently disagreeing with his love for academia.

Sam’s removal allowed his younger brother Dickon Tarly (Tom Hopper) to move up the line of succession for the powerful respected house of Tarly.

But why would Randyll, a man built on a respectful lineage and history, remove his first-born son from the family seemingly at random?

The theory goes that, if Sam is secretly a smuggled Targaryen child, Randyll simply wanted to ensure that a blood relative took over his estate and power.

If this theory were to come out as the truth it would certainly rock the entire show.

To start, this would mean that Jon and Sam are half-siblings with the same father - Rhaegar Targaryen.

Rhaegar originally married Elia having two children, Rhaenys and Aegon, but went on to have a secret affair with Ned Stark’s (Sean Bean) sister Lyanna Stark (Aisling Franciosi) who later birthed Jon in secret.

The theory would make Sam the true heir to the thrown over both Jon and Daenerys (Emilia Clarke).

However, as an almost-unknown maester with no support behind him, it would be extremely difficult for Sam to garner enough support to take the throne if he wanted to.

Meanwhile Jon Snow actor Kit admitted to having a “gruelling day” filming a fight scene.

Producer Dan Weiss laughed that Kit will be “swinging that sword a lot”.
