Barbara Bush net worth: Former First Lady worth millions on her death

Barbara Bush, the wife of former US president George Bush, has died aged 92. After decades in the public eye, what was her net worth?

Barbara Bush, the wife of US president George Bush, and the mother of US president George W Bush, passed away on April 17.

The 92-year-old’s life was striking in that she served as both First Lady in the White House and the mother of a president.

She was suffering from lung disease, heart failure, and Graves' disease before her death. A few days earlier, her family had announced that she had decided to be at home rather than seek further medical treatment for her illnesses. She is survived by her husband, who is 93.

How much was the former First Lady worth?
According to reports, Barbara had a net worth of £17.5 million and a combined net worth with her husband of £36 million.

Barbara was a 16-year-old college student from New York when she met her future husband at a dance.

He went away to fight in World War II with the US Navy and they married in 1945 when he returned on leave.

They had six children together. George Jr, who would follow his father into the presidency, was their eldest. Their next born, son Robin, died of leukaemia when he was three.

After the war the family moved to Texas and her husband went on to make millions in the oil business.

He entered politics in 1963 and became a Congress representative for Texas two years later.

Barbara was ahead of her time when it came to causes such as gay rights and abortion. When her husband announced his candidacy for president in 1980, she publicly declared her support for equal rights and said she was pro-choice, two opinions that were at odds with many people in politics, including her husband.

He eventually lost but became vice president alongside Ronald Reagan, so they moved to Washington DC.

During that time their son Neil was diagnosed with dyslexia, so Barbara wrote a children’s book, detailing her family’s experience with the condition from the eyes of their dog, and donated the proceeds to charity.

Her growing interest in literacy issues saw her begin a lifelong fight against illiteracy in America, and she was soon a popular guest at speaking engagements across the country.

Eventually, she set up the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy, which still exists today.

By the time George Sr became president in 1988, she was a household name across the country.

After leaving office in 1993, her husband added to their fortune by capitalising on his position as a former president. For years he was very much in demand for lucrative speaking engagements, and The New York Times reported he was paid up to £70,000 per speech.

The former president also earned a healthy income as an author – he has written or contributed to more than 50 books.

She also had several bestselling books, including a Barbara Bush: A Memoir and Reflections: Life After the White House.

The couple owned two homes outright – a compound in Maine that includes an oceanfront, six-bedroom home worth in excess of £8 million, and a smaller house in Texas. (Express UK)
